AI voice technology for African languages
Spitch is a pioneering language technology company founded by Temi Babs in 2022, dedicated to breaking down language barriers and making AI-powered communication accessible across Africa. Based in Nigeria, Spitch focuses on developing cutting-edge small language models specifically designed for African languages, starting with Nigerian Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo. The company’s mission is rooted in addressing a critical gap: while over 3,000 languages are spoken across Africa, only 13% of Africans speak English, and just 1-2% speak it as their first language. Spitch recognized that mainstream voice technologies like Siri, Cortana, and ChatGPT largely exclude African languages, perpetuating digital inequality and threatening cultural preservation.
Through its developer-friendly API and intuitive Spitch Playground, the company offers four powerful speech technology solutions: speech generation (text-to-speech), real-time voice translation, transcription, and diacritization. These tools enable businesses to communicate with customers in their native languages, transforming sectors including agriculture, education, financial services, and customer support. Spitch’s text-to-speech feature supports multiple authentic voices for each language (four options per language), allowing organizations to power AI-driven chatbots, virtual assistants, IVR systems, and accessibility features for visually impaired users. The platform’s real-time translation capabilities enable enterprises to confidently expand into new markets, ensuring nothing is lost in translation when serving over 200 million people across Nigeria and beyond.
Since its founding, Spitch has achieved remarkable traction and validation in the African tech ecosystem. The company was selected for Accelerate Africa’s AA3 cohort and by Demo Day had served over 600 developers and businesses, enabled communication for over 200 million locals, and reached final stages of partnership with a large East African telecommunications company. With plans for strategic expansion into additional East African languages, Spitch is redefining what it means to serve customers in Africa with its own cutting-edge LLM infrastructure. The company’s vision extends beyond customer service—by enabling content creators to transform English courses, podcasts, and YouTube series into Hausa, Igbo, and Swahili products without additional production costs, Spitch is unlocking new revenue streams and ensuring African languages thrive in the digital era.
