Personalized mobile learning for Africa's underserved students.
M-Shule is a pioneering EdTech platform founded in 2016 by Claire Mongeau and Julie Otieno that revolutionizes education access across Sub-Saharan Africa. The company delivers personalized, AI-powered learning through SMS and WhatsApp, eliminating the need for smartphones or internet connectivity. By leveraging feature phones that are widely available across the continent, M-Shule reaches marginalized communities in informal settlements and remote rural areas where traditional educational resources are scarce or nonexistent.
The platform’s innovative approach combines artificial intelligence with item response theory—similar to algorithms used in standardized tests like the GRE and GMAT—to create adaptive learning experiences. M-Shule analyzes each student’s performance in real-time and delivers bite-sized, tailored lesson quizzes and content via simple text messages. This personalized methodology ensures that primary school students receive appropriately challenging material in subjects like mathematics and literacy, with the system automatically adjusting difficulty based on individual progress and learning patterns.
Since its launch, M-Shule has served over 23,000 students across Kenya and continues to expand its impact throughout East Africa. The platform has attracted support from notable investors including Engineers Without Borders Canada and the MasterCard Foundation, raising over $520,000 to date. By making quality education accessible to populations where 80-90% lack smartphones or reliable internet access, M-Shule is bridging the digital divide and empowering millions of underserved learners to build essential skills for their future.
