AI-powered retail assistant transforming small shops across Africa
VendAI is a Kenya-based artificial intelligence startup transforming retail operations across Africa. Founded in 2021, the company provides an AI-powered retail assistant designed specifically for small shops and FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) retailers. Through advanced large language models and computer vision technology, VendAI delivers real-time insights into sales patterns, inventory management, and operational efficiency, helping retailers make data-driven decisions that optimize their business performance.
The platform distinguishes itself through its software-only approach, avoiding the logistics and distribution challenges that have plagued competitors like Market Force and Twiga. Retailers can simply upload their inventory using images, and VendAI’s AI engine provides intelligent recommendations for stock management, pricing strategies, and business growth. The company is also developing offline functionality to ensure retailers without consistent internet access can still benefit from its tools, addressing a critical infrastructure gap in African markets.
Currently in beta with over 250 businesses testing the platform, VendAI is preparing for its official launch in December 2025. The startup has secured partnerships with key distributors including Mahitaji Enterprises in Nairobi and is actively raising a pre-seed funding round. Co-founded by Timothy Liede, VendAI represents a new generation of African tech companies focused on practical, scalable solutions that directly address the needs of small and medium-sized businesses across the continent.
