AI for Social Impact in Africa
Sunbird AI is a non-profit organization specializing in developing open, practical AI solutions tailored for Africa’s public institutions, social initiatives, and policymakers. The company is driven by a mission to translate leading-edge research in artificial intelligence and data science into usable products that improve planning, real-time decision-making, and service delivery, strengthening the feedback loop between citizens and government.
Among Sunbird AI’s signature open-source projects is Sunbird Translate, an African language technology system for text and speech supporting Acholi, Ateso, Luganda, Lugbara, and Runyankole. Another major effort, the Environmental Sensing Project, deploys custom hardware devices across cities to gather real-time sound and noise data, the first of its kind for urban planning and mitigation in the region. Additionally, Sunbird AI builds decision-support products such as a machine learning-powered site identification system for rural electrification, enhancing the accuracy of renewable energy infrastructure development in Uganda.
Sunbird AI stands out by prioritizing openness, collaboration, and African technical capacity building. Their team—co-located with Makerere University’s AI Lab and contributing to Data Science Africa—helps institutions across the continent navigate the benefits and risks of AI while fostering policy dialogues, technical training, and responsible, context-aware innovation for social good.
